Thanks to composer Caeser Pink, I got the chance to borrow this wonderful synth for a few days. It was my first time playing a hardware synth and it was awesome! That was my gateway to the world of synths. This is a piece that I wrote the first night I was playing around with it.

Sequenza Improvvisata

Inspired by the “Sq!Sequenza” patch from the Yamaha CS1x and the FB OSC setting in the Roland SH-201.

I didn’t write anything down for this one. I developed the idea for the structure over a couple of hours and the recorded it “live”, this was the 3rd take

Most of the times all I get out of a ring mod pedal or effect is just a harsh, weird metallic sounds, so it was surprising to hear the subtle and interesting ring mod in this little synth. While playing, I alternate between syncing with the speed of the high “drone” note, and the varying speed of the middle voice, or try to follow the rhythm that seems to come out of the combination of both.

Choppin' Chopin

A reinterpretation of Chopin’s Prelude in C minor, Op.28 No. 20

I followed the original score as much as I could. Due to the extra notes played by the arpeggiator, I had to lengthen the duration of some chords, and I order to reflect a change a in dynamics I played single notes on the bass instead of octaves for the “p” section.

Glitchy Prelude

I used the pulse width modulation and the LFO to have the notes repeated, since it doesn’t have an arpeggiator and I the sequencer didn’t seem that easy to use to me. I liked the misalignment that happens when I play note a little bit off time, which is just natural.

Broken Ion Dance

This short piece is a broken Ion’s broken dance. I feel that the arpeggiator gives the illusion that there are different grooves, depending on what notes you focus on, and they all seem to go in and out of sync. At time it feels like 4/4, 3/4 or 6/8.

This is one of two pieces I got to write and record with the Moog Subsequent 37 a couple of years ago, when I got the chance to borrow it for a few days.
